Bristol radius map: 5, 10, 25 and 50 mile circles

Radius rings around Bristol, England, United Kingdom

This page does one thing. It puts 5, 10, 25 and 50 miles around Bristol, then tells you what falls inside each band. Centre point is 51.4552, -2.5966. Want a different centre? Click the map. The drawn circles are only a starting position, and they’ll move with you.

The short version. 52 separate places sit inside the 50 mi circle, worth about 3,127,961 people between them, and that’s counting only settlements GeoNames lists at 15,000 or more. The 5 mi ring alone holds 2. Nearest of the lot is Kingswood, 3.8 mi east. For catchment work that density is the whole difficulty, because almost any radius you pick swallows a dozen towns at once.

What sits inside each ring

A quick anchor for the scale. Ten miles from the centre reaches roughly to Yate, 9.7 mi north-east. The furthest name in these tables is Bridgend, 42.3 mi away to the west, and it still sits inside the outer circle. People underestimate that big ring every time, which is most of why this page exists.

One caution before you lean on the table. A GeoNames centre is a single point, usually somewhere near the historic core, and a city isn’t a point. Kingswood is listed at 3.8 mi because that’s the gap between two reference points. Its nearer edge is closer than that, probably by a good margin.

The area of each ring

Worth pausing on the areas. 79 mi² inside 5 mi. 314 inside 10. 7,854 by the time you reach 50. Each step looks modest on screen and is anything but on the ground, because the maths squares the radius while your eye just reads a line that got a bit wider.

50 mi (80.47 km)7,8545,890321,844,211

Put the two tables together and you get a crude density. Inside the 25 mi circle there are about 1,283,750 listed people spread over 1,963 mi², so roughly 654 per mi². Crude is the right word. It counts GeoNames settlements only, so villages and open country vanish, and it treats a harbour or a reservoir as populated ground.

Crow-flies distance and what it leaves out

Every circle here is a straight-line radius, measured crow-flies. Bridgend shows up at 42.3 mi west, and the road out there will be longer. Always is. In a town laid out on a grid, reckon on 20 to 40 per cent more actual travel than the radius says. Put a river, a harbour or a decent hill in the way and that rule of thumb stops meaning much at all.

Plenty of sites draw a plain circle, label it drive time and leave it there. Those are worth ignoring. A proper isochrone needs a road graph, turn restrictions and some idea of traffic, and it changes shape by the hour. What a circle gives you instead is a bound that doesn’t move: nothing outside the 25 mi ring is within 25 miles of Bristol, whatever the roads do.

How this page was worked out

On the arithmetic. Distances are great-circle distances on a sphere of radius 6,371.0088 km, worked out with the haversine formula, and each bearing is the initial heading you’d take leaving Bristol. Areas use the spherical cap rather than πr², which shaves a hair off the flat answer. About one part in seventy thousand at 50 miles. Invisible, and true anyway.

One oddity you’ll notice if you compare pages. Population counts come from GeoNames, which records what the national statistics office last published, so some are a few years old and a couple are more. They’re good for ranking and for rough sizing. The figure carried for Bristol is 479,024, which for some cities means the municipality and for others the whole urban area, so compare it with care.

What people actually use these rings for, roughly in order of how often it comes up: delivery and service areas, finding somewhere to live within a sensible distance of work, sizing a catchment for a shop or a clinic, checking how far an event’s noise and traffic will carry. Straight-line distance is the right first pass for all of them.

Bristol radius questions
What towns are within 10 miles of Bristol?
Kingswood, Mangotsfield, Keynsham, Nailsea and Portishead, among others. The full count is 6 places inside the 10 mi circle, and the two tables above give every one of them that GeoNames lists, with its distance and bearing. Smaller settlements won’t appear, because the dataset stops at 15,000 people.
How many people live within 25 miles of Bristol?
Adding up the listed settlements plus Bristol itself gives 1,283,750. Treat that as a floor rather than an answer. Everything under 15,000 people is missing, rural population is missing entirely, and the 14 places in the 10 to 25 mi band carry whatever census year GeoNames last imported for them.
Is this a driving radius?
No. Straight-line, every time. The edge of each circle sits the same real distance from the centre in every direction, which is what you want for coverage and reach. A drive-time shape is lopsided and needs a routing server to work out, and this site doesn’t run one.
Can I move the centre or change the radius?
Yes, the map is the full drawing tool. Drag the centre, resize any ring, add more circles, switch between miles and kilometres, then share a link or print it. The tables on this page stay fixed on 51.4552, -2.5966, so they’re a reference rather than a live readout.
